Modesty and Humility: Lessons from Ramadan's Sacred Glow

Muslims around the world are preparing for the blessed month of Ramadan, a month in which they focus on acts of worship and building a strong relationship with Allah. In Ramadan, Muslims fast, offer prayers, and also increase acts of charity.  In addition to the prohibition of food and drink, this sacred month offers a profound lesson of humility, modesty, and much more.

The Garment of Modesty:

In Ramadan, many Muslims choose to wear more modest clothing, and many people start to wear the Hijab.  This month serves as a reminder that true beauty lies not in outward appearances but in the depths of our hearts and actions. It's a call to dress with respect for ourselves and others, fostering a sense of inner peace and outward dignity. This practice extends beyond Ramadan, encouraging us to approach our attire with mindfulness and consideration, valuing self-worth over the fleeting trends of the world.

Humility's Embrace:

Fasting during Ramadan strips us bare, reminding us of our dependence on Allah (SWT) and our shared humanity. Hunger pangs are a powerful equalizer, breaking social hierarchies and reminding us that we're all equal in God's eyes. Humility, the cornerstone of Islamic values, is cultivated through this experience. It encourages us to renounce arrogance and treat those who are less fortunate with kindness and gratitude for the blessings we often take for granted.

Many people choose to give Zakat during this month and also increase in other acts of charity. Family get-togethers are very common and gifts are exchanged throughout this blessed month. At SMAMZ, we also choose to partner up with local UK charities like One Nation www.onenationuk.org who do some amazing work around the world.

Lessons for Every Day:

The lessons of modesty and humility gleaned from Ramadan are not meant to be confined within its boundaries. They're the guiding lights of our daily lives, shaping how we interact with the world around us. We can continue to learn from these lessons in the following ways:

  • Practice mindful dressing:  Without seeking attention or validation through outward appearances, choose clothes that reflect your values and make you feel comfortable and confident.
  • Embrace empathy:  Let us remember the shared experience of hunger during Ramadan, and offer compassion to those in need whenever we can.
  • Cultivate gratitude:  Express appreciation for the blessings in your life, big and small, and remember that everything comes from Allah (SWT).
  • Engage in acts of service:  Volunteering your time and skills to help others reminds you of the real value of serving humanity. Simple acts of volunteering like checking on your neighbors can go a long way and the month a ramadan is a good time to start these good practices.

We can transmit the spirit of Ramadan throughout the year, by internalizing these lessons and incorporating them in our everyday lives. In order to build a world of respect, compassion, and gratitude, we must strive for humility and modesty.

Don't forget, the lessons of Ramadan aren't just about Muslims. They're universal truths that can inspire and guide people of all faiths and backgrounds. Throughout the year and beyond.
